Friends of Beautiful Joe on the Web
Beautiful Joe was an ordinary dog that had the great misfortune to fall into the hands of a cowardly human who took cruel liberties with him. No doubt there are similar stories, past and present, of cruel relationships between humans and animals - as there are of humans among themselves. However, we must attempt to minimize, if not eliminate, such totally unacceptable behaviour if we are to hope for a humane society.
What Makes Beautiful Joe Different?
Beautiful Joe lived and died in the town of Meaford, Ontario, Canada. The Beautiful Joe Heritage Society is carrying on the spirit of the book to enhance relationships between humans and animals. The first step was the acquisition and naming of Beautiful Joe Park along with the erection of a memorial plaque over his gravesite in the park. This has been completed. In addition, plans have been formulated to enhance the existing amenities in the picturesque 8.5 acre (3.4 ha) Beautiful Joe Park (a pavilion, benches, lighted walkways, a foot bridge for improved access, etc.) to create a meeting place for canine related events and the promotion of humane treatment of all animals.
It is with great pleasure that we of the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society extend this invitation to you, your association or corporation, to get involved and become:
A "Friend of Beautiful Joe"
Our project is multi-faceted and requires many hands and many dollars to come to fruition. We want to meet people who share our vision and who will become part of our quest of making this a better world for animals. There are many ways you can participate from being a good-will ambassador (write a letter to your local newspaper or do a class project, etc.), to monetary support or in-kind contributions (all donations are tax deductible), the donation of memorabilia or by being a volunteer. You may wish to remain anonymous or be recognized by receiving a Friend of Beautiful Joe membership card, your name on our website, or some other mutually agreed upon forum.
