Celebrating the Animal  Human Bond

Beautiful Joe Heritage Society

Tricks For Joe

Hi, and welcome to the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society website. I’d like to share a story with you. This is Brownie, and Brownie lived in Meaford, Ontario. She is seen here admiring the statue of her friend, Beautiful Joe. Joe was a real life dog from Meaford whose story of abuse and rescue captured the hearts of millions of people in the 1893 best-selling novel “Beautiful Joe” by Canadian author, Margaret Marshall Saunders. Joe’s story helped change the world's view of dogs from mere animals to beloved companions. The Municipality of Meaford has a whole park dedicated to their hero Beautiful Joe. Brownie often likes to visit and pay her respects to Joe in Beautiful Joe Park to thank him for the wonderful life she and other dogs enjoy today. Brownie used to live in the house of the family that rescued Joe and she’d like to honour him with a trick and raise donations for the goals of:
• Promoting and celebrating the humane treatment of all animals
• Establishing Beautiful Joe as Canada's Most Famous Dog, and
• Meaford becoming known internationally as the Home of Beautiful Joe
